What kind of secrets regarding the
concepts of art and life are hidden in the artistic style of ‘still life’? It
could be argued that ‘still life’ is an artistic style that is so deeply
interconnected with the past and with iconic figures in the history of art that
the only confirmation of stillness in it can be traced in the absence of our awareness
for its current state. Prompted by George’s Merianos participation in the 4th
Tirana International Watercolour
Biennale, an effort will be made for a re-approach of the still life artistic
style, this time taking into consideration more contemporary creations.
Furthermore,
The sunflowers by George Merianos is a work of art that
despite its contemporary nature manages to convey to the current day what seems
to be ancient and intertemporal concepts regarding the correlation between art
and nature, as well as insight regarding the management of such a correlation
by the artist, or any human being in general.
Ash, the
remnants of matter long gone, becomes the main structural material through
which the creator’s intention manifests as art. Taking into consideration this
specific material, we come into confrontation with the literalism in this work
of art, which manifests as an indeed still life, and not just a representation
of it. However, George’s Merianos work is not governed by just a single
dimension. It oscillates between two different dimensions mirroring life and
the human nature itself. Conflicting binaries are evidently present within the
artistic work, with the bright yellow colour of the flowers resisting the dark
background, and the clean colour confabulating with the shadows that are made
from ash and soil. Consequently, the literalism in the sunflowers becomes the
structural material of a metaphorical visual discourse
Frequently
we tend to admire the magnificent sunflowers during a field trip, but how often
do we pay attention to the fact that those flowers follow the sun during the
day only to turn to the east during morning time. This is a vivifying process
that comes into a violence pause when the flowers are uprooted. The reification
of such a tragic event within the artistic discourse, is actualised by an ‘invisible’
hand that is not directly depicted, rather it manifests through the dramatic
shading of the work as well as the sullen sunflowers. The artists chooses to
depict the violent outcome of the criminal act of uprooting the flowers in a
manner similar to ancient drama by choosing to depict only the outcome of an
act of violence, and not the act itself. This by no means comprise for concealment
of violence. Moreover it makes up for a more sounding presence of violence, by
depicting its outcomes.
The same
‘invisible’ hand that uproots the sunflowers, place them into a vase in which
they stand disoriented having lost their connection with the earth and the sun.
Despite their apparent debilitation those sunflowers seem to not resile from
life. The clearly pronounced forms of the flowers come in contrast with the
bright and uncertain forms in the bottom of the artistic composition. The vase
seems to have failed in effectively enclosing the sunflowers, since the artist
has chosen to depict the vase with obscure outlines making the vase appear cold
and unable to fulfil its purpose of enclosing the sunflowers. On the other hand
the sunflowers seem to effuse into the composition, as well as beyond it in an
artistic overflow that touches the perception of the observer, making him/her
doubt the boundaries of the vase, but also of the composition as a whole. In
such a manner and through the hands of the artist the victim of the uprooting
is devictimised and is able to claim its place in a newly defined space.
However, is that space singular or is it possible for the uprooted sunflowers
to put down their roots in multiple spaces? The depicted sunflowers exist
primarily unto the conception of the artist. Later on their depiction on paper,
and finally after the work of art has been seen into the thoughts of the
observer. From that point onward the number of spaces in which the sunflower
can spur roots and evolve is untraceable, since the spiritual places in which
this can manifest are unlimited. For someone those sunflowers might be the
childhood memories of a field trip or a light of hope in a dark day. The only thing
that we can be sure of is that the artistic work, since the moment of its
presentation into the public, has been rooted in so many different spiritual
places that there is no hand able to uproot it anymore. Such is the magic of
art, to offer us the seeds and give us the opportunity to nurture them so they
grow and blossom enabling us in return to find a glimmer of light within the
darkness, just like the sunflowers.
I would
like to conclude with a phrase from Adorno’s aesthetic theory, that I feel resonated
deeply with the specific work of art. ‘Precisely
through its progressive spiritualization, through its division from nature, art
wants to revoke this division from which it suffers and which inspires it.’ Any
ending can be the beginning of something new, as long as we learn how to
discern the seeds of creation through the ashes. Art must fulfil this deep
educational role, and that is precisely why we seek shelter in it.
